Shantou City, referred to as "Shantou", also known as Tuocheng and Tuodao, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, a provincial sub-central city, and a special economic zone. It is located in the eastern part of Guangdong Province, bordering Chaozhou City and Jieyang City to the north, and the South China Sea to the south. As of April 2025, Shantou City governs 6 districts and 1 county, with a total area of 2,199 square kilometers. As of the end of 2024, Shantou City's permanent population will be 5.5755 million. The city's dialect is Chaoshan dialect. In the ninth year of Jin Yixi (413), the Shantou area began to have a county-level organizational system. Ngee'an County belonged to Guangzhou, and the county governed Haiyang County (in today's Chaozhou). In 591 of the Sui Dynasty, Nghe An County was reorganized into Chaozhou, and Chaoshan was named Chaozhou from then on until the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In modern times, the Shantou Port in Chaozhou Prefecture emerged after its opening, forming the combined name of Chaoshan, hence the name Chaoshan. During the Republic of China, Haiyang County was renamed Chao'an County, and Shantou was established as a city directly under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, a special area was established in the Chaoshan area, named Chaoshan Area. When the area was rebuilt in 1956, it was renamed Shantou Area, and both are located in Shantou City. In 1981, Shantou City established a special economic zone. In 1983, the city-governed county system was implemented. In 1991, Shantou City was divided into three prefecture-level cities, Shantou, Chaozhou, and Jieyang. Therefore, it was also called Chaoshan Three Cities (some say Chaoshan Four Cities).
