Shaoguan City, formerly known as Shaozhou. A prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province is located in the northern part of Guangdong Province, bounded by Hunan to the north, Jiangxi to the east, and borders Heyuan, Huizhou, Guangzhou and Qingyuan cities in the province to the southeast, south and west respectively. It is located between 23°53′～25°31′ north latitude and 112°53′～114°45′ east longitude, with a total area of ​​18,400 square kilometers. As of August 2023, the city has jurisdiction over 3 districts, 4 counties, 1 autonomous county, and 2 county-level cities. As of the end of 2024, the city’s registered population is 3.3491 million. The city mainly speaks Hakka dialect, followed by Cantonese dialect. Shaoguan City is located in the south of the Nanling Mountains, with a terrain that is high in the north and low in the south. ​​The whole territory is geologically located in the Hunan-Guangdong fold belt, with a subtropical monsoon climate, hot summers and cool winters, abundant precipitation and a developed water system. Shaoguan City had little contact with the Central Plains in ancient times, and there was no physical construction at that time. During the Han Dynasty, the present-day Nanxiong and Shixing areas had not yet established independent counties and belonged to Nanye County, Yuzhang County, Yangzhou. During the Three Kingdoms, Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties, counties and prefectures began to be established in northern Guangdong. By the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the country was reunified and northern Guangdong was stabilized. During the Republic of China, northern Guangdong belonged to Guangdong Province. In 1949, the Shaoguan Municipal People's Government was established to govern Shaoguan City. In January 1977, Shaoguan City was upgraded to a provincial municipality; in June 1983, the Shaoguan area and Shaoguan City were merged and collectively known as Shaoguan City (prefecture-level city).
