Chaozhou Municipality, referred to as "Chao", also known as Fengcheng, is a prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province. It is one of the four cities in Chaoshan, a famous hometown of overseas Chinese, and a gateway city in eastern Guangdong. Located in the easternmost part of Guangdong Province, it has jurisdiction over three districts and counties: Xiangqiao, Chaoan and Raoping, with a land area of 3160 square kilometers. The permanent population is 2.576 million, and there are about 2.7 million Chaozhou residents abroad. In the ninth year of Jin Yixi (413), the Chaozhou area began to have a county-level establishment. Ngee'an County belonged to Guangzhou, and the county governed Haiyang County (in today's Chaozhou). Since then, Haiyang County has been the seat of counties and states in the past dynasties. In 591 of the Sui Dynasty, Nghe An County was restructured into Chaozhou, and it was named Chaozhou from then on until the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In modern times, Chaozhou Prefecture’s Shantou Port emerged after the opening of the port. Haiyang County was renamed Chao'an County during the Republic of China.
